Concrete tiles are currently the
most economical means of providing a pitched roof over a dwelling.
The timber truss roof structure for the application of concrete
tiles can be relatively light.
Clay tiles are an expensive material,
and are selected for aesthetic attributes, or where existing buildings
with clay roofs are altered or extended.
Slate is durable and has inherent
aesthetic qualities. It is considerably heavier than the concrete
roof tile and requires a more substantial roof structure.
Fibre cement slates or shingles are
manufactured from fibre cement and are supplied in a number of different
colours. This material is light-weight and suitable for re-roofing,
for example, corrugated iron roofs which have not been constructed
to take the weight of the heavier slate, concrete or clay tiles.
Profiled steel sheeting, manufactured
in South Africa from a number of different materials such as galvanised
sheet steel, stainless steel, aluminium and zinc, copper and "chromadeck"
(corrugated iron sheeting). This is best suited for industrial and
retail buildings.

Waterproofing |
Water ponding on a flat roof system will increase
the rate of roof wear and the chance of leakage. Drainage and evaporation
of any water should occur within a day of a rainstorm. Whenever
possible, measures should be taken to reduce any significant ponding.
In some cases ponding may cause or be the result of roof framing
settlement. When the surface of a flat or slope roof is worn and
requires replacement, the existing roofing material in most cases
should be removed down to solid decking.
Because the design of this type roof usually restricts visibility
of structural members, removal of the surface is the only opportunity
you have to check the condition of the roof framing. Removal of
the old, worn surfaces will also increase the life of the new roofing.
Wherever water has ponded for any length of time, you can also find
deteriorating, rotting felts. In addition to the action of the water
causing the bitumen to liquefy, the presence of industrial wastes
that collect on the roof will mix with the water and turn it into
a chemical solution. The bitumen and felts are eaten away rapidly,
disintegrating the roof. Ponding water has a remarkable way of finding
its way into and through a roof. An easy way to prevent leaks is
by keeping your drains clean and using a waterproofing product that
will tolerate ponding water.
Please be warned that inexperienced and amateur attempts to repair
your roof with incorrect procedures or materials could cost you
dearly, and possibly force you to re-roof.
If you are experiencing any of these problems with regard to your
roof, you may want to consider contacting us, and we will gladly
assess the problem and give you a free quotation.
